New York Pledges US$3.9M to Boost Maritime Hydrogen Transport Logistics

New York State, through NYSERDA, has launched a US$ 3.9 million funding initiative to advance maritime hydrogen logistics, specifically targeting vessel solutions for hydrogen transport across its ports and waterways. This pivotal investment supports hydrogen-powered shipping trials and seeks vendors to design, test, and scale hydrogen-ready vessels in the U.S. Northeast

New York State is offering $3.9m to support the development of maritime hydrogen transport solutions.

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) said the funding was open to companies advancing new and retrofitted ships to transport hydrogen in the state.

The authority is seeking proposals focused on developing efficient, “economically viable,” and scalable vessels that can deliver at least 20,000kg of hydrogen per shipment across a minimum of 100 nautical miles.

The programme is hoped to help overcome the logistical and economic challenges posed by transporting hydrogen.

Those applying for funds will have to partner with a clean hydrogen fuel supplier to qualify, but none of the vessels need to be powered by hydrogen.

NYSERDA said preference will be given to teams with experience in designing, building, or operating vessels that transport alternative fuels, or those familiar with New York waterways and ports.

Proposals are due by 1 October.

“The transport solutions brought forward through this opportunity will help facilitate the safe adoption of clean hydrogen in hard-to-electrify sectors,” said NYSERDA boss Doreen Harris.

National Association of State Energy Officials President David Terry said the fund would help connect producers with demand centres.

This latest funding call comes after NYSERA opened a $3.7m funding opportunity for hydrogen fuel cell projects aimed at supporting grid balancing.
