Plastic Energy Enters Insolvency Proceedings While Spanish Plants Remain Operational

UK-based chemical recycling company Plastic Energy has entered administration proceedings following reported liquidity problems. The insolvency process affects the group’s British entities, Plastic Energy Finco Ltd and Plastic Energy Limited.

Operations in Spain are not part of the proceedings. The company confirmed that its recycling plants in Seville and Almería continue to operate normally.

Liquidity Problems Trigger Administration

Plastic Energy reportedly entered administration at the end of April after facing a shortage of liquidity. Two administrators, Geoffrey Paul Rowley and Patrick Donnan of FRP Advisory, were appointed to oversee the process.

The administrators are expected to explore the sale of the group’s strategic assets. These include intellectual property, patents, and ownership stakes in affiliated companies and joint ventures.

Chemical Recycling Technology Remains Active

Founded in 2015, Plastic Energy developed the TAC (Thermal Anaerobic Conversion) process, a chemical recycling technology designed to convert plastic waste into pyrolysis oil known as Tacoil.

This recycled oil can be used as an alternative to fossil-based feedstock in the production of new plastics and petrochemical intermediates.

The company employs around 200 people globally and has positioned itself as a key player in the advanced recycling sector.

Spanish Subsidiary Continues Operations

Despite the insolvency proceedings in the United Kingdom, the Spanish subsidiary, Plastic Energy S.L.U., remains outside the administration process.

Its facilities in Seville and Almería continue processing plastic waste, helping maintain the company’s operational presence in the European recycling market.

Key Assets and Patents May Be Sold

Administrators are now seeking potential buyers for the company’s most valuable assets.

The sale process may include:

  • Chemical recycling patents
  • TAC process intellectual property
  • Stakes in joint ventures
  • Ownership interests in subsidiary companies  Plastic Energy

Industry observers will closely monitor whether another recycling or petrochemical group acquires the technology and ongoing projects.
