Toyota Plans to Roll Out Hydrogen Trucks for California Logistics Operations

Toyota is scaling its commitment to zero-emission freight by deploying hydrogen fuel cell trucks across California’s logistics sector, supporting clean transportation goals and decarbonization initiatives.

Toyota plans to deploy hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks to serve in its West Coast US logistics fleet.

The trucks will run on routes between the Port of Long Beach and the firm’s North America Parts Center California (NAPCC) in Ontario and San Diego, as part of Toyota Motor North America’s plans to reduce its use of diesel-powered trucks.

Toyota has confirmed to H2 View that it plans to use the jointly developed fuel cell Kenworth T680 trucks for the deployment.

The trucks are built on a Paccar chassis, integrated with Toyota’s fuel cell platform.

In 2023, the companies said initial customer deliveries would be made in 2024 ahead of serial production in 2025.

“With Class 8 heavy-duty trucks powered by fuel cells moving out of their pilot phase, Toyota will begin introducing production-level FCEV trucks to its logistics fleet,” a Toyota statement said.

To support the deployments, the auto major will install an Iwatani liquid hydrogen refuelling station at the NAPCC campus, with hydrogen sourced from Air Liquide’s steam methane reforming (SMR) plant in North Las Vegas.

The plant is not equipped with any carbon capture technology. However, the French major industrial gas company claims it can use renewable natural gas when supplying markets like California, which has a strict low-carbon fuel standard.

It comes as Toyota looks to double down on its hydrogen ambitions amid wider industry delays and challenges.

Having revealed the plans at the ACT Expo on April 28, Jordan Choby, Toyota Group Vice-President of Powertrain Engineering, said, “We envision a stronger hydrogen fueling infrastructure, evolved fuel cell stacks and a whole ecosystem of engaged partners and suppliers who, like us, are in it for the long haul.”
