Tyrewise Marks First Anniversary with ~4 Million Tyres Collected in NZ
Intro:
In just its first year of operation, Tyrewise Aotearoa, New Zealand’s regulated tyre product stewardship scheme, has collected nearly 4 million end-of-life tyres, surpassing expectations and signaling strong momentum for the country’s circular tyre goals.
Section 1: Scheme Performance & Early Outcomes
- Tyrewise launched on 1 September 2024, replacing prior ad hoc disposal approaches with a national, regulated collection and recycling system.
- By its first anniversary, Tyrewise reported nearly 4.2 million tyres collected, reflecting rapid uptake by industry partners and collection sites.
- The scheme now includes over 5,000 registered partners across importers, retailers, tyre fitters, transporters, recyclers, and public collection sites.
- To date, the scheme has already processed a significant portion of tyres into usable forms, aligning with interim recycling and reuse targets.
- Moving forward, Tyrewise aims for 80% of collected tyres processed domestically by year 4 and over 90% by year 6.
These early results not only show broad participation but also the viability of a regulated product stewardship model in a geographically dispersed context.
According to Tyrewise, Aotearoa New Zealand’s first regulated product stewardship scheme for tyres has marked its first year of operation with nearly 4 million end-of-life tyres collected for recycling or repurposing, and more than 5,000 registered partners nationwide.
Since its launch on 1 September 2024, the scheme has surpassed its collection and processing targets. It aims to recycle and repurpose 80% of tyres by its fourth year and more than 90% by its sixth. “Tyrewise isn’t just New Zealand’s first regulated product stewardship scheme, it’s also the most successful product stewardship scheme in the country to date,” said Adele Rose, CEO of 3R Group, the scheme manager.
To strengthen domestic markets, Tyrewise recently invited expressions of interest for funding, receiving over 60 applications across research, development, and community initiatives. Mark Gilbert, Chair of Auto Stewardship New Zealand, emphasized the crucial role of registered partners — including importers, retailers, and recyclers — in achieving these results.
The scheme operates through a nationwide collection and recycling system funded by a stewardship fee on all new tyres sold, replacing inconsistent disposal charges and closing gaps left by voluntary schemes. This ensures access to collection services nationwide, with the public also able to dispose of up to five tyres free of charge at designated sites.
