Reoil’s rCB in Printing Inks: Feasibility and Formulation Insights
Recovered carbon black (rCB) in printing inks is gaining momentum, with Reoil examining the formulation feasibility and industrial performance metrics required for market acceptance.
A recent technical overview from Reoil Sp. z o.o., distributed by HARKE GROUP, evaluates the feasibility of using recovered carbon black (rCB) in printing ink formulations. This material is derived from the pyrolysis of end-of-life tires and offers sustainability advantages by reducing the reliance on virgin carbon black and lowering overall carbon emissions. Additionally, rCB presents cost efficiency, making it an attractive option for large-scale ink production.
The report emphasizes that although rCB pellets might seem too coarse for use in printing inks, advanced milling technologies, like bead mills or three-roll mills, can effectively break down the material to sub-micron sizes. Proper dispersion is essential for achieving satisfactory color strength, gloss, and overall performance of the ink.
Material properties, including a moderate surface area and a relatively high ash content (19–25%), indicate that recycled carbon black (rCB) is well-suited for applications where achieving an ultra-deep black color is not critical, but sustainability and cost reduction are important. To ensure stability and consistency, the formulation process may require additional grinding, filtration, and the use of dispersants. It is advisable to conduct lab trials to refine these parameters effectively.
